After 4 minutes a yellow flag goes up, and after 4min30sec a red flag. We proceed in alphabetical order. This is the only point on the agenda, but there are some reminders below: - There were a bunch of reminders in the summary of the last SYM meeting (copied below). Please read through them again. In particular remember to upload all your papers to the ArXiv and add the report number "CPH-SYM-00" to all articles not published by Jan 1, 2010. - Please upload all published papers to CURIS, accessible through KUnet. - Please have your PICTURE taken by visiting Nina in the main secretariat. We've arranged that she will be available Wednesday just after the meeting! - Please think about which events (masterclasses, mini-conferences) you would like to organize in 2010/11. We still have a rather open schedule! Consult the research plan, linked from the SYM webpage under "About the center, for members" to see what we promised DG. - Reserve Nov 22, 2010, 13:15-16:15 in your calendar. We'll have the DG site-visit. More info about that later! It's a pleasure to announce that all SYM members now have a personal homepage. Good work!! A few of you are still missing a picture, which you are encouraged to add, since it's much easier keeping track of who-is-who that way. The SYM webpage http://sym.math.ku.dk has undergone some further improvements. Check it out! For instance old meeting summaries can now be found under http://sym.math.ku.dk/about/internal/ See you Wednesday, Ellen & Jesper ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2010 22:53:31 +0200 (CEST) From: Jesper Grodal To: symalle@math.ku.dk Subject: [Symalle] summary: SYM meeting Sept 1, 2010 SUMMARY of the monthly SYM meeting, Sept 1, 2010. (Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00; We furthermore have a series of SYM research talks held every 3rd Wednesday of each month, also at noon.) ==== 1) Welcome + 2) Who is who Welcome to the six new postdocs Matthew Gelvin, Heiko Gimperlein, Ellen Henke, Anssi Lahtinen, Johan Ă–inert and Oscar Randall-Williams and the new PhD student Tim de Laat! Please look at their personal homepages, linked from the front page http://sym.math.ku.dk to see a short summary of who they are. (And, if the link doesn't work, wait a day, and then write them a kind email enquiring about the status of their homepage :)) ==== 3) SYM webpage and general organization (research groups, mentors etc). The webpage http://sym.math.ku.dk was introduced. Check it out and see if you can spot yourself in the pictures we took---we are constantly trying to improve the webpage, so please write Ellen to suggest improvements, you can cc Jesper G. jg@math.ku.dk and Emanuele dotto@math.ku.dk. THE DEPT GUESTS DATABASE: https://secure.math.ku.dk/english/guests/ Please remember to announce your guests in the database AS EARLY as possible. Mark them "to be confirmed" if you are not sure of the details yet. Also remember fill out the slot "organized by". Eg if Alexander Berglund is organizing a guest with relevance to topology and algebra he would write "AB, TOP, ALG"; it then naturally gets displayed on the research group pages of topology and algebra, as well as the center homepage. (SYM gets added automatically if TOP or NCG is present.) THE DEPT CALENDAR http://www.math.ku.dk/english/calendar/ Please announce seminars/conferences/masterclasses here as early as possible. Same rules about "organized by" as for the visitors database. If organizing a conference, workshop etc, please announce both the conference AS WELL AS the individual talks when they become available. (Note the dept calendar contains only public events, so the monthly SYM meetings, site visits etc will be announced separately.) YOUR PERSONAL HOMEPAGE: Every SYM member is required to maintain an up-to-date personal homepage containing at least 0) picture of you 1) 1 paragraph research description 2) List of publications 3) CV. If you maintain a google calendar, or other such thing, you are strongly encouraged to make it publically available as well. You are welcome to copy pages of existing members eg http://www.math.ku.dk/~mrs/ or http://www.math.ku.dk/~otogo/ Emanuele Dotto dotto@math.ku.dk is willing to help if you encounter practical/technical problems. YOUR SMILING FACE should furthermore appear in the picture gallary on the 1st floor. Please see Nina in the main secretarys office to have your picture taken. RESEARCH GROUPS and RESEARCH STRUCTURE. For the research structure of the center, please check out Emanuele's flash diagram: http://sym.math.ku.dk/about/center_structure/ as well as our research plan: http://www.math.ku.dk/~jg/rpmo.pdf. Many practical things, including graduate teaching, is structured around the research groups TOP and NCG. ==== 4) Current seminars and how to sign up for emails 4a) Topology seminar (Usually Monday 15:15; responsible: Hepworth) 4b) NCG seminar (Usually Wed 15:15; responsible: Erik Christensen) 4c) Topology reading seminar (No time yet; responsible: Berglund) 4d) Research Plan series (Lunch meeting; 3rd Wed every month responsible: Jesper Grodal) 4e) Baby NCG seminar (No time yet; Sara Arklint is working on it) PLEASE SIGN UP for the topology and NCG seminar emails by visiting http://www.math.ku.dk/topology http://www.math.ku.dk/english/research/ncg/ ==== 5) Publishing research - Personal homepage - ArXiv (report number: CPH-SYM-00) - Journals (consult with advisor/mentor) Please put all preprints on the ArXiv as well as your personal homepage. NOTE: When uploading things to the ArXiv, please write "CPH-SYM-00" in the report number field. This enables us to retrieve your preprints automatically. Please add this number retroactively to ALL papers you have on the ArXive which will be published in 2010 or later, irrespective of where the research was actually carried out and in what part of 2010 you where employed at copenhagen. Also, add journal references to your ArXiv summissions as they become available. === 6) Inviting and hosting visitors; the visitors database. If you need help with organizing a hotel and an office for your guest, please contact Ellen Juel Nielsen. Her office is on the first floor next to Lillians office. Please see 3) for a description of the visitors database. === 7) Organizing conferences. Postdocs are encouraged and generally expected to organize workshops, and this is usually quite a rewarding and fun experience. Some inpiration to topics can be found in the research plan linked above, as well as our list of past conferences and workshops http://sym.math.ku.dk/pastconferences/ (Links to conferences and workshops organized before 2010 can be found via the TOP and NCG pages) If you are organizing a conference, seminar or master class, please contact Ellen as soon as you know. She will help you with the economical and practical aspects of the planning. === 8) What to do when absent (sick, traveling, etc) - Registring absense: fravaer@math.ku.dk - Booking travel: ViaTravel - Travel insurance: get card! - Travel/expense reimbursement: Fill out form! If you are absent (eg out of town or sick) you have to inform the secretariat by sending an e-mail to: fravaer@math.ku.dk stating dates and short description of absense (eg, on holiday, sick, attending Barcelona Conference on Algebraic Topology). University travel is generally booked through the online travel site viatravel. You will need to get a username and password from the math dept. A separate mail about procedures for obtaining funding for postdoc/phd travel will follow. First step is to discuss any travel plans with your advisor/postdoctoral mentor. In general, the center has some funds available, but try to obtain external funding to as large a degree as possible. When travelling on university business (conferences etc), please remember to get an insurance card by contacting Nina or Lone in the secretariat. (If you are traveling on holidays please make sure to purchase adequate insurance, if not covered by the "yellow" insurance card). When you come back from your trip, please get in touch with Ellen and she will help you with completing the travel reimbursement form. Remember to keep all receipts as you need this for the form. === 9) Other KU-things (time allowing): - The internal website of KU "KUnet" - Registring publications in CURIS - Using the library - Webpage management: the CMS system. KUNET: The internal website of KU kunet.dk was shortly introduced. Unfortunately there is still not much information to be found in English. However, the university is working on improving this, and meanwhile you'll have to be content with watching a funny movie featuring a puppet which looks like the rector. LIBRARY: To borrow books from the library you'll need a login name and password. This is a function of your office number and the function is described in a folder in the library. Address library problems to bibliotek@math.ku.dk; they usually answer promptly. Also report problems found with the english website http://www.math.ku.dk/english/library/ to that address. (I've already reported that the link to the main search page is incorrect: Use http://primo-7.kb.dk/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?scp.scps=scope:(NATMAT)&vid=KGL&fromLogin=true&dstmp=1283717671970&dscnt=0&vid=KGL instead!) CMS SYSTEM: The webpages updated by a content management system, and you'll need to use this for making conference/workshop webpages. To use it, you'll need to get a username and password from science it. Emanuele Dotto can help you if you encounter trouble. === Next SYM meeting is in a month October 6, from 12:00 to 13.15 Next SYM-seminar is on September 15 from 12:05 - 13:00 where Jesper G. will talk about A2: Group actions via homotopy theory. See the research plan http://www.math.ku.dk/~jg/rpmo.pdf Magdalena's talk is postponed to the next SYM meeting. We'll also have a round of postdoctoral mathematical speed dating soon. Each postdoc gets 5 min to present their research. Details to follow! See you, Ellen & Jesper
